Air Duct Replacement

It may be time to retire your old air ducts.

Is your ductwork is over 15 years old? You should replace it. You may not realize that your air ducts can be a major source of your system’s inefficiency. In fact, as much as a third of your heated or cooled air could be escaping into your attic, crawlspace or basement.

Is your house too dry in the winter or too humid in the summer? This can be an indication that there is a problem with your ductwork. Do you hear rattling, whistling or other strange noises coming from your air ducts? This can mean the ductwork is loose or has holes for air is leaking from. Again, this is a problem.

Air flow – a balancing act

Do you ever feel like one part of your home is much warmer or cooler than the rest? This could be a sign that you have leaky HVAC ducts that are losing air and failing to sufficiently heat or cool certain parts of the house. It could also be the result of unbalanced ductwork.

Do you smell mildew? Is your home stuffy or dusty? This is a sign that something isn’t right with the ductwork. If your ductwork isn’t well insulated, condensation can form when moist, warm air moves through it. That’s a potential health problem.

Lifespan of air ducts

Even though ductwork can have a lifespan of 20 or 25 years, after 15 years it begins to deteriorate and may no longer work with today’s highly-efficient HVAC technology. Vibration and thermal stress take a toll on your ductwork after a decade and a half. Winter heating causes your ductwork to expand, while summer cooling causes it to contract. This can pull apart your ductwork and seams – sometimes completely apart.

Ductwork hides away in our ceilings, crawl spaces, and walls, so we don’t really think about it. But, whether or not you realize it, your ducts are doing a lot of hard work for you. They transfer all the warm and cool air from your furnace and air conditioner to the many areas of your home. As they age, developing cracks and leaks, this already difficult feat becomes harder and harder.

You probably don’t give your ductwork much thought since they are hidden in your ceilings and walls. Fortunately, when your ducts aren’t performing well, they’ll give you signs.

Noisy HVAC have you thinking out loud

Is your HVAC unit noisy? It may indicate that your ducts are undersized for your system or that the ducts are imbalanced. Your HVAC then works too hard to push air through, creating that noise you hear, stressing the system and increasing your energy usage.

If you do need new ductwork, keep in mind that doing so can increase your system’s energy efficiency, reduce your monthly power bill, improve your indoor air quality, balance the temperature throughout your home, and extend the life of your HVAC system.

Air Duct inspection

Our knowledgeable service technicians can perform a thorough inspection of your ductwork using specialized tools, then offer their observations and make their recommendation. If your ducts are relatively new and only have a few leaks, they may just need to be re-sealed. At King Heating & Air Conditioning, our goal is to make you and your family live as comfortably and healthfully as possible.
